‘Talking urinal cakes’ to fight drunk driving in Michigan

In an effort to cut down on drunk driving over the Fourth of July holiday, the Michigan State Police are distributing “talking urinal cakes” to around 200 bars and restaurants.

The Detroit News on Friday reported that 400 urinal deodorizer blocks with the ability to verbally remind bathroom-goers to call a cab would be placed in bathrooms in Wayne, Bay, Ottawa and Delta counties.

“Listen up,” the pucks will reportedly say as customers take a whiz. “That’s right, I’m talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many?”

“Then do yourself and everyone else a favor: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don’t forget to wash your hands.”

Wizmark, the company behind the “Interactive Urinal Communicator,” also features models with flashing lights and sound effects. The devices will cost taxpayers about $21 each and last around three months.

According the The Detroit News, the idea is a “brilliant move” due to “guy rules” which force men to look down instead of at each other while they urinate.

“We’re doing this to draw attention to Fourth of July drunk driving enforcement,” Office of Highway Safety Planning spokesperson Anne Readette told the paper. “We want people to be safe and make responsible decisions.”
