Arizona mom arrested for giving beer to toddler in sippy cup

A Phoenix, Arizona woman has been arrested after police say she filled her 2-year-old son’s sippy cup with beer and gave it to him. According to the Associated Press, 36-year-old Valerie Marie Topete is currently being held on suspicion of child abuse.

Witnesses called police from a Phoenix pizza restaurant Tuesday night claiming they had seen Topete pour beer from a pitcher on the table into the toddler’s cup. The AP reported, “Officers examined the contents of the cup and determined the liquid was consistent with beer.”

Topete claimed that she had given beer to the child because he kept reaching for the pitcher. It is not currently known whether the woman has a lawyer.

The boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution, then released to custody of his father.
