WASHINGTON — At least three US military members were among those wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Colorado movie theater showing the new Batman film, the Pentagon said Friday.

A sailor and two airmen suffered injuries in the assault in the Aurora suburb of Denver, and another US Navy sailor remained “unaccounted for,” the Defense Department said in a statement.

“The Navy and the Air Force are working with the families of these service members to ensure they have the care and attention they need,” it said.

The Pentagon also said that the suspected shooter, James Holmes, has never served in any branch of the US military.

The assault left at least 12 dead and nearly 60 injured.

Chaos erupted when the gunman tossed some kind of grenade into the audience at a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” then opened fire on terrified patrons as they scrambled for the exit.
