NY woman harassed after finding husband faked his own death

The wife of a New York man accused of faking his own death says he has been threatening her since being found several states away earlier this week.

According to The Village Voice, Evana Roth has received hostile text messages after her husband, Raymond, was caught speeding by police in South Carolina less than a week after he was declared missing.

“I’m afraid he’s going to come after me because I’m the one who found out he is alive,” Evana Roth said. “This is a terrible nightmare that I want to wake up from.”

WABC-TV reported that at a press conference Friday, she and her lawyer produced items Raymond Roth arranged to have left at Jones Beach in Long Island following his staged disappearance July 28. Roth’s son from a previous marriage allegedly told police he went swimming 750 east of the closest lifeguard and never made it back to shore. A subsequent missing-persons search turned up nothing but his shoes, cell phone, keys, and wallet – sans his driver’s license.

It was that license that flagged him to authorities after he was caught speeding in South Carolina Thursday morning. That night authorities used a search warrant to pull two computers from Roth’s home.

Evana Roth told The New York Daily News she found emails Wednesday suggesting father and son collaborated on splitting up Raymond’s assets: he had cleaned out the couple’s bank accounts, forced her to sign their home over to him and taken her off his will.

She also said he admonished her via text message to “be nice” after learning she had planned the press conference.

“I don’t know what’s in his mind. I’d just like to apologize to everybody who went out there to look for Raymond,” she said. “There’s no words to explain how sorry I am and how embarrassed I am about this whole situation.”
