Ex-Border Patrol union leader indicted for spending union funds on mistress

The former head of the National Border Patrol Union was indicted in federal court Thursday on charges of using hundreds of thousands of dollars in union funds for personal use for more than 20 years.

According to U-T San Diego, Terence J. “T.J.” Bonner was accused of using union money during his tenure from 1978 to 2010 to travel to sporting events and visit a mistress in Chicago, while claiming to be doing union-related work while submitting false travel reimbursement claims. He is also accused of being falsely reimbursed for lost pay when he was actually downloading and watching pornography on computers bought with union money.

“Come to find out, apparently he took care of his mistress pretty well,” Bonner’s successor, George McCubbin, told KFMB-TV Thursday. “So one would have to assume that’s where a lot of the funds went.”

Bonner is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court on Monday. McCubbin also said the union would hire its’ own legal team in an attempt to get its money back from Bonner.

More than 130 Border Patrol and Customs agents have been arrested or indicted on corruption charges in the past eight years.
