Stephen Colbert took on what he called “the other storm” swirling around the Republican Party on The Colbert Report Tuesday night – Missouri senatorial candidate Rep. Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” debacle from last week – by donning the congressman’s face in order to expand on Akin’s position.
“All he’s saying is, the female body shuts that whole thing down to prevent pregnancy during a legitimate rape,” Colbert-as-Akin (R-MO) explained. “Therefore, any woman who gets pregnant wasn’t really raped.”
Of course, Colbert condeded, “one or two every woman in America” was upset by Akin’s remarks, which prompted Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney (who is already trailing President Barack Obama by 12 percentage points among “she-voters,” as Colbert called women) and other fellow GOP members to call for Akin to abandon his campaign against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO). Recent polling shows Akin trailing McCaskill by 9 percentage points.
Colbert also caught one of Akin’s few supporters, Rep. Steve King (R-IA), contradicting his own remarks about not hearing about statutory rape victims being forced to get abortions “in any personal way.”
