Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night.

Giffords, who was shot in the head last year, was walked onto the stage by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and received lively applause before reciting the pledge. Her appearance brought many DNC attendees to tears.

Six people were killed, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl, when a gunman opened fire at a political meeting Giffords was holding with constituents outside a grocery store in Tuscon. She has undergone intensive rehabilitation to regain movement on the right side of her body.

Giffords resigned from Congress earlier this year and has been receiving additional recovery treatment.
