Singer Fiona Apple was arrested Wednesday and is currently being held in a Texas jail after allegedly being caught with marijuana, a published report said Thursday morning.

Apple was on her way to a Friday show in Houston when she was pulled over in Hudspeth County, a notorious west Texas cop shop on the Mexican border that’s known for busting celebrities traveling from California. Other recent arrestees in Hudspeth include musicians Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson, along with the hacker George Hotz.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ was first to learn of Apple’s arrest, reporting that she was caught in possession of hashish, a concentrated form of marijuana, and was still in custody as of Thursday morning.

There have been several confrontations with Mexican drug cartels in Hudspeth, including an incident in which a road crew allegedly came under fire from across the border. That happened more than a year after Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West warned residents to “arm yourselves” and prepare for the worst if drug war violence flares on the U.S. side of the border.

Thanks to all the paranoia about the potential for cartel traffic and drug war violence, the county has become known as a key narcotics checkpoint. In spite of this, the county prosecutor in Hudspeth, C.R. “Kit” Bramblett, told Raw Story last March that he thinks marijuana should be decriminalized.

The Mexican government says that more than 50,000 people have been killed in cartel-related violence since 2006, but independent studies suggest the true death toll may be roughly double the official figure. Much of the fighting has been concentrated along the U.S.-Mexico border.

A Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Department spokesman did not respond to Raw Story‘s request for comment.
