French prosecutors dropped a rape investigation Tuesday against former International Monetary Fund chair Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
The Associated Press reports that the key witness withdrew her testimony and now says no rape was involved in a December 2010 encounter with Strauss-Kahn in Washington D.C.
Strauss-Kahn and three other men were accused of “aggravated pimping in an organized gang” and allegedly forming a prostitution ring for sex parties in the U.S. and France. Strauss-Kahn has insisted that, though he attended orgies, he did not know sex workers were being paid to take part.
The witness, a Belgian sex worker known to the court as “Marie-Anne S.,” said a friend of Strauss-Kahn’s grabbed and held her hands while the former French minister and presidential contender forcibly had sex with her.
“He held my hands. He pulled my hair, he hurt me,” she said in May. “I refused saying no, I don’t want to … I clearly said I didn’t want to several times, out loud.”
According to France 24, judges in the northern city of Lille could still pursue a case against Strauss-Kahn for taking part in an incident that “could be described as gang rape.”
The prosecution’s decision is expected to be delivered on Nov. 28. Strauss-Kahn still faces charges in a civil suit filed against him in New York by Nafissatou Diallo for a separate incident last year. Strauss-Khan has filed a $1 million countersuit in response.
