The single letter separating the president’s name from that of America’s former enemy number one has led to many verbal miscues, the latest of which took place during the final presidential debate Monday night.

Moderator Bob Schieffer, setting up a question about Pakistan’s loyalty to the U.S., accidentally referred to Osama bin Laden as “Obama.”

“We know the doctor who helped catch Obama—bin Laden,” Schieffer said.

To their credit, Schieffer caught his mistake and moved right ahead, and neither candidate seemed to notice the miscue. At least Schieffer can take solace in the fact that his stumble was fairly benign and did not, say, imply that the president had been killed.
