The state of Israel and Hamas are not only fighting with rockets and weapons, but are using social media platforms as new arenas for battle, reported the Washington Post.

The Israeli military media office has a Twitter account, @IDFSpokesperson, which tweeted on Nov. 14 to announce a “widespread campaign on terror sites & operatives in the #Gaza Strip.” It also posted a video of the airstrike.

Hamas tweeted back on its English-language handle @AlQassanBrigade, “Our blessed hands will reach your leaders and soldiers wherever they are (You Opened Hell Gates on Yourselves).”

The Israeli military media’s Twitter account got 50,000 new followers in the span of a single day.

In addition to constant tweets, on Nov. 15, @IDFSpokesperson announced the Israeli military media office’s new Tumblr.

@AlQassanBrigade has also been active, updating its Twitter page multiple times an hour. Around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 15, it tweeted, “Medical sources: Death toll in #Gaza hit19 martyrs including 6 children, a woman two elders and more than 180 injuries.”

Both sides also have their own hashtags: #IsraelUnderFire for the Israelis and #GazaUnderAttack for the Palestinians.

One heavy Twitter user from Gaza, Nader Elkhuzendar, said, “Twitter gives us a voice, but there’s also a lot of misinformation at the same time. It’s a tool you need to be careful using because there’s a lot of noise out there.”
