Judge: Woman must wear ‘idiot’ sign for driving on sidewalk
Probably everyone who regularly tempts fate on America’s roadways has yelled at a fellow motorist a time or two — which is what makes this story so satisfying.
Cleveland, Ohio resident Shena Hardin, 32, was sentenced Monday to wear a sign explaining her boneheaded traffic maneuver: driving on a sidewalk to avoid having to stop for a school bus.
It wasn’t her first time, either: after a bus driver saw her hop the curb multiple times over several days, he notified police and brought a video camera to work. Officers also set up a sting in case she tried it again.
Sure enough, video shot by the bus driver showed her pulling up onto a sidewalk through a driveway in front of a day care center. And not only was she caught on tape, a waiting police officer saw her commit the offense, which was replayed on Fox 8 Cleveland Monday night.
A judge ordered Hardin to spend an hour for two days next week standing at a nearby intersection wearing a sign that says, “Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus.” The Associated Press noted that the judge also suspended her license for 30 days and fined her $250.
