The woman who was brutally gang-raped and beaten in New Delhi, India, on Dec. 16 died at a hospital in Singapore where she was being treated, reported the Associated Press.

A hospital statement say she “died peacefully.”

News of the rape sparked days of demonstrations, which turned violent at times. Police used tear gas, water cannon and batons against those protestors.

The AFP reported that the number of rapes in New Delhi rose 17 percent from last year, a result of the country’s justice system that seems to inspire little fear of punishment for the crime.
