The vote for Speaker of the House began Thursday morning in the wake of the New Year’s fiscal cliff deal that has left many in the Republican Party unhappy with the party’s Congressional leader, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), particularly members of the tea party caucus.
According to NPR, the vote began at 12:31 p.m. and within a few minutes, “a few protest votes” had been lodged, including a vote for former Secretary of Sate Gen. Colin Powell and two votes for Rep. Allen West (R-FL), who lost his bid for re-election in November, and whose replacement Rep. Patrick Murphy (D) was sworn in today.
Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) and Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX) cast the votes for West.
