In a mix of comedy and catharsis, ABC host Jimmy Kimmel has taken to inviting guests to read from their own digital peanut galleries: the insults they tend to get on Twitter.

“Celebrities with Twitter accounts — and I know this because I have one — get bombarded with hundreds of insults a day,” he explained.

To illustrate his point, various celebs agreed to share their reactions, to the strains of REM’s “Everybody Hurts.” Some of the women reported gender-based insults (Christina Applegate was called “an old slut”; Kirstie Alley “a dirty whore”). Some were bizarre, like the person who asked, “I am not being mean, but why does Anderson Cooper reminds me of dinosaurs?!?!?” (Cooper’s response: “F-ck you.”). And some were just homophobic (rock duo Tenacious D were compared to John Lennon & Paul McCartney, “only fatter and gayer.”)

Some, like Simon Cowell, pretended to take it to heart when someone called him “a dick.”

“That’s one of the nicest things anyone’s ever said about me,” he said, fighting faux tears. “I’ve got a bit of a lump in my throat now, thank you, ’cause I really am a dick.”

But some, like Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, took the jibes with a smile.

Malcolm In The Middle? More like mushy in the middle. Lose some weight Heisenberg,” someone named TXGrizz shot at Cranston, who responded, “I’ve had a good chuckle over that one,” before adding ominously. “I’m coming after you, TXGrizz.”

Maybe Dana Perino was right about Cranston’s show after all.
