On Wednesday night’s edition of “The Colbert Report,” host Stephen Colbert talked about recent gun safety measures that the government has proposed and how they prove that the real victims in America’s shooting tragedies are guns themselves. He also directed some stinging words to the NRA head Wayne LaPierre.
Colbert opened the segment by saying that sometimes he thinks it would be better just to move to an armed citadel somewhere, because “make no mistake, they are coming for our guns.”
He continued, “And we freedom-loving gun-lovers are totally defenseless. Other than, you know, the guns.”
“Gun control talk,” he said, is everywhere, for reasons he doesn’t want to get into because it would undermine his position.
President Barack Obama has even appointed “Reich Marshal Biden” to head up a special gun control task force, which he fears will only lead us down the slippery slope to jackbooted Power Point presentations.
But really, he asked, aren’t guns the victims of the real discrimination here? He showed video featuring the remarks of former NRA President Marion Hammer, who compared gun control efforts to racial discrimination.
“Banning people and things because of the way they look went out a long time ago,” she said in an interview on NRA radio. “But here they are again. The color of a gun. The way it looks. It’s just bad politics.”
“So sad. Banning a gun based on its color. I’m sure if Dr. King were alive,” Colbert said, showing a photo of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “he would stand with the NRA.”
“Because folks,” he concluded, “isn’t it just a little too convenient to blame guns for gun violence?”
He then showed video of the NRA’s chief lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre extolling the dangers of “blood soaked video games,” and calling for the creation of “a national database of the mentally ill.”
“If it’s crazy to call for putting armed police in our schools to protect our children,” said LaPierre, “Then call me crazy.”
To which Colbert responded, “Folks, I don’t know about you, but I agree with Wayne LaPierre. You, sir, are fucked in the head.”
