Sen. Schumer: NRA ‘just dumb’ to oppose all restrictions on guns

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday mocked the notion that gun laws were unconstitutional because of the Second Amendment.

“To not talk about guns when it comes to gun violence is to not talk about smoking when it comes to lung cancer,” he said. “It just doesn’t make any sense.”

Citing the U.S. Supreme Court’s key decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, Schumer noted the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms “in defense of hearth and home” but also allowed for reasonable limitations on gun ownership.

He said it was unnecessary to have 100-round magazines or assault rifles for self-defense, two items that President Barack Obama proposed banning last week.

“Just like on the First Amendment, we say you can’t scream fire in a crowded theater falsely,” Schumer explained. “We have anti-pornography laws. We have anti-libel laws. There are reasonable limitations. And some in the pro-gun movement, and the NRA in many instances, doesn’t believe in any limitation at all. That is not unconstitutional, that just is dumb.”
