“True or false?” he asks Tancredo. “When marijuana legalization passes and marijuana is legal, the next time I’m out in Colorado, we’re going to smoke a joint together.”
“Deal,” a wide-eyed Tancredo says with a chuckle before the two shake on it.
It’s a hell of a pitch: Who wouldn’t want to see one of the most virulent Republican members of Congress in recent years getting stoned on camera? It hasn’t happened yet, but the 10-minute trailer Hartle published for his film “Grassroots — The Comeback of Cannabis” asks viewers to “Help us get Congressman Tancredo rocky mountain high!”
The movie tracks the progress of drug reform activists in Colorado during the campaign for Amendment 64, which legalized marijuana use, production and distribution in the state despite a federal law prohibiting the drug. It’s still not clear what the federal government plans to do about that whole situation.
The former state rep. and failed presidential candidate lost his bid for Colorado governor in 2010 after running as a third-party candidate. He lost his seat in Congress in 2008 after 10 years in office.
Hartle did not respond to a request for comment.
