On his show Wednesday night, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart ripped apart Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) for claiming President Barack Obama had singled him out with a strawman argument during his inaugural address.

The President said that safety net programs like Social Security and Medicare “do not make us a nation of takers,” chiding Ryan without naming him. But Ryan protested that Obama was misconstruing his political philosophy. Ryan said he never claimed benefiting from “earned entitlements” made someone a “taker.”

“Oh, so when you say ‘takers’ you don’t mean Grams, sweet old Grams, you mean hobo Joe,” Stewart remarked.

However, Stewart pointed out Ryan was rather specific about who he considered to be takers. Citing a Tax Foundation report, Ryan said in 2011 that about 60-70 percent of Americans took more from the government than they paid in taxes. Medicare and Social Security accounted for a large chunk of that percentage, while welfare only accounted for two percent.

“Look, the idea that Republicans had actually characterized even Social Security and Medicare as hallmarks of a taker society, I’ll let the speakers from this year’s Republican National Convention in Tampa explain how that came to be,” Stewart said, playing a clip of speakers reciting the convention’s theme. “Yeah, you built that shit.”
