Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), who has announced a run for Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ (R-GA) seat, is asking voters to donate to his campaign because he was the “first Member of Congress” to call President Barack Obama a socialist.
“I was the first Member of Congress to call him a socialist who embraces Marxist-Leninist policies like government control of health care and redistribution of wealth,” the Georgia Republican writes. “I’ve not only voted against raising the debt limit, I’ve actually introduced a bill to LOWER THE DEBT LIMIT!”
“In Congress last session I was honored to enjoy a close friendship with TEA Party favorite Lt. Colonel Allen West from Florida,” he continues. “On the Senate side, I’m a staunch ally of now retired Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina — and of course, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.”
“Just about every week, my friends and closest allies congratulate me and genuinely thank me for telling the truth of just how messed up this country has become under President Obama.”
Broun notes that he’s “not a wealthy man by any stretch of the imagination” and “that’s why I announced my candidacy on February 4~ and why I’m urgently requesting your personal support today.”
The congressman says that a donation of even $35 “will be a real blessing to my campaign.”
But “[i]f you can send $2,500, $1,000 or even $500, I sure would be grateful for your personal generosity,” he concludes.
Just after Obama was elected as president in 2008, The Associated Press reported that Broun warned them that the new commander-in-chief would “establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.”
“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” the congressman cautioned at the time. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”
“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” he insisted. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”
“You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential of going down that road.”
But almost a month earlier, another member of Congress reportedly beat Broun to his name-calling claim to fame.
Then-Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) told the Meigs County Republican Party that the country would be better off with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) as president because Obama was “left of Teddy Kennedy.”
“With all due respect, the man is a socialist,” Voinovich said.
