In a segment aired Wednesday night on “Conan,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) didn’t take a swig of water during his State of the Union response: he took a hit off a bong.
“He could have waited, you know?” Conan said. Co-host Andy Richter replied: “They’re trying to reach out to young people.”
The visual gag is just another bit of piling on after what was roundly regarded as an embarrassing presentation that strangely did not actually respond to what President Barack Obama said on Tuesday night.
Either way, Conan isn’t the only one who thinks it might be a good idea for Republicans to broaden their horizons a bit.
Appearing on Conan’s long-form online show “Serious Jibber Jabber” last December, New York Times pollster Nate Silver said that the numbers simply are not with Republicans unless they take up some new issues, like marriage equality, immigration reform or drug legalization. “That’s what a rational political party would do,” he said.
This video is from “Conan,” aired Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013.
