A Fox News contributor on Wednesday confusingly associated the Qatar-based media network Al Jazeera with terrorist “sleeper cells” in Detroit.

Fox News host Megyn Kelly noted during the segment that Al Jazeera had faced accusations of anti-American bias and was now “about to infiltrate America.” The media network acquired Current TV in January and plans to launch the channel Al Jazeera America this year.

“The point is they want to differentiate themselves from their sister network, but at the same time, it’s the same thing,” Fox News contributor Lisa Daftari said. “They’re having the same type of coverage. They’re apparently expanding to eight cities, including Detroit, Michigan.”

“Detroit, Michigan is a large ex-pat community of Muslim-Americans where sleeper cells have been detected,” she continued. “You can Google this, you can find out all this information. So if you’re trying to set yourself apart, the Qatari petro-dollars are backing this network, you’re still developing in this area where the sleeper cells were detected. They’re going to have to do much more to prove to me that they’re different from their sister network.”

The U.S. Justice Department targeted the so-called “Detroit sleeper cell” following the September 11, 2011 terrorist attacks. The case against four Muslim men ended up falling apart. The lead prosecutor faced allegations of misleading defense lawyers by withholding key evidence and was later dismissed from his position.
