MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Thursday night ripped into a bill in Indiana that would require women to undergo to trans-vaginal ultrasounds twice if they wished to terminate their pregnancy.
The bill, approved by the state Senate Health and Provider Services Committee on Wednesday, would require clinics to conduct trans-vaginal ultrasounds on women both before and after dispensing the abortion-inducing drug known as RU-486.
“Go ahead and imagine that job,” Maddow remarked. “Go ahead and imagine the person whose job it is going to be to do that, to try to convince Indiana women to come back in for a second medically unnecessary trans-vaginal probe ultrasound. ‘Hi, its Ann from the clinic, the governor insists that you come back in and get probed again.’”
Sue Swayze, the legislative director of Indiana Right to Life, said women shouldn’t view the trans-vaginal ultrasound as intrusive since the women had already gotten pregnant vaginally.
“There is the argument for it in Indiana,” Maddow said. “If you have ever had anything in there, you can’t really object to the governor putting something in there too — twice, against your will.”
