After falling and breaking his arm while walking through downtown Phoenix on Thursday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio released a pair of videos of himself in a hospital bed, talking about his determination to return to work. According to Talking Points Memo, the 80-year-old sheriff spoke to a woman off camera about how the injury took place and said that he would return to work as soon as possible, but that he didn’t know when that would be.

In the first video, Arpaio said that the blame for his accident lies solely with himself. “What happened, I blame myself. I fell and I broke my arm.”

“How did it feel?” asked a woman offscreen. “Hurt?”

“Tell you one thing,” Arpaio answered, “I wouldn’t recommend that situation to anybody.”

In the second video, the same woman’s voice asked Arpaio when he’d like to return to work.

“I’d like to go back to work tomorrow,” he replied, “but I don’t think it’s in my cards right now.”

Arpaio is currently facing a recall petition by Arizona voters. The controversial sheriff has been cited by the U.S. Department of Justice for unfairly persecuting Latinos by way of traffic stops and unjustified incarcerations while allowing more than 400 cases of sexual assault and other violent crimes to go un-investigated and un-prosecuted.
