Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to require chicken products be labeled with a warning that those products may contain feces (presumably of the chicken variety). The group also pushed for more regulations when it comes to cleaning poultry carcasses, according to piece in Tuesday’s Atlantic Journal Constitution.
“The USDA’s current policy deems any product without visible feces ‘wholesome,’ misleading consumers who expect a wholesome product to be free of animal feces,” said the petition to both the USDA and Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.). “To protect consumers from exposure to feces, USDA must regulate feces as an adulterant and place labels on chicken products alerting consumers to fecal contamination.”
PCRM, a radical anti-meat advocacy group, said that about half the chicken products the group bought from local grocery stores tested positive for E. coli. — which festers best in feces.
Like other ostensibly “healthy” vegetarian and animal rights’ groups, People for the Ethic Treatment of Animals for example, PCRM likes to make a big show in public. Late last year, PCRM posted billboards telling people that their tasty chicken was chock full of actual crap.
The petition is unlikely to get much traction. And meat eaters shouldn’t feel too alarmed about their safety, either (one’s ethical dilemmas is another thing). Numerous studies, include data from the Centers for Disease Control found that it’s meat-free produce that accounts for nearly half of all foodborne illnesses.
