Former Smiths frontman Morrissey has cancelled the rest of his US tour due to a string of medical problems, his publicist said on Saturday.

The 53-year-old British singer was forced to call off 22 concerts across the United States after suffering double pneumonia, a bleeding ulcer and Barrett’s oesophagus in recent months.

“Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour,” his publicist Lauren Papapietro said.

“Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts.”

Fans with tickets for the cancelled gigs will be refunded, she added.

The outspoken singer and animal rights activist had already been forced to postpone 21 US dates this year due to his health woes.

He also pulled out of the Vive Latino festival in Mexico, which he had been due to co-headline last Thursday.

He had told fans last month that he was “terribly sorry” for the inconvenience and that he should be “as fit as a ferret” for rescheduled shows.

“The positive from all of this is that there are now no known ailments left for me to try,” he said with characteristic dry humour.

Double pneumonia occurs when both lungs are infected.

Symptoms of Barrett’s oesophagus, which occurs when the cells in the food pipe start to change, can include heartburn and indigestion.

Famous for hits in the 1980s with the Smiths including “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now”, the prickly singer released his first solo album in 1988 and has followed it up with a further nine records.
