Conservative Pastor John Hagee on Tuesday explained that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which the Bible says that God destroyed by fire, was a “pilot study” in how to deal with “homosexual society.”

During his weekly broadcast of Hagee Hotline, the pastor responded to a viewer who wanted to know if God would punish all Christians if the U.S. government decided to legalize same sex marriage.

“Sodom and Gomorrah is God’s pilot study for his response to the homosexual society,” Hagee explained. “The fact is that not everyone in Sodom and Gomorrah was homosexual.”

The anti-LGBT pastor noted that Abraham had asked God if he would save the cities if “10 righteous” people opposed homosexuality.

“They were not found,” Hagee said. “So, here’s the measuring rod. It’s not if the government approves it, it’s if the people accept it. And if the righteous accept it, judgment will come.”

Earlier this year, Hagee warned his viewers that same sex marriage was just “two disturbed people playing house.”
