Police in Washington said Sunday night that a 69-year-old man was taken into custody after calling 911 early in the morning to report that he shot his adult son and daughter and was thinking about shooting himself too.

Officers arrived on the scene only to discover the man was still armed with a small handgun, which he willingly surrendered to them, according to Fox affiliate KCPQ Seattle. A neighbor told reporter James Lynch that they did not hear any gunshots.

Police reportedly said the family had a history of domestic violence and potential mental health concerns. Two younger boys, 6 and 7, were both found unharmed, police added. Their mother allegedly slept through the incident and was also unharmed.

The female victim died from a single gunshot wound to the head, police said. The male is in critical condition.
