Singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked staged a protest outside the night club Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, California on Thursday night. According to the Associated Press, the club had canceled a scheduled performance by Shocked after the alt-folk singer’s homophobic outburst at a recent performance.

Sporting a mask and wearing duct tape over her mouth that read “Silenced by fear,” Shocked strummed her guitar and shook her head vigorously when passers-by attempted to ask her questions. She directed them instead to a sign requesting that people use a Sharpie pen to write messages on the white coveralls she was wearing.

Earlier in the day, the singer took to Twitter to invite the public to an “art project” at the club.

A former professed bisexual, Shocked outraged audience members and the public earlier this month when, at a show in San Francisco, she went on an onstage anti-LGBT rant that included the phrase “God hates fags.”

Shocked’s career peaked in the ’90s, but since then the singer has continued to release material and tour. In interviews, she has spoken about her conversion to Christianity.

Moe’s Alley owner told the AP that he hoped Thursday’s show would be a positive experience.

“We will not be bashing Michelle Shocked,” he said. “Rather we will celebrate music, diversity and send some healing Santa Cruz energy her way.”

The club replaced Shocked with two LGBT bands, Beaver Fever and Frootie Flavors.
