College hoops fans were horrified Sunday as a player for the Louisville Cardinals fell and broke his right leg, sustaining a gruesome injury that left his shin bone “fully protruding” from his leg, according to one report from the scene.
Louisville player Kevin Ware sustained the injury roughly 6 minutes before the half, as he jumped to defend against a Duke player’s shot. In video published to YouTube (embedded below), Ware appears to land wrong, and his right leg just folds in on itself.
“Watched Ware’s spill again and it had nothing to do w/ elevated court,” he added in a follow-up post to Twitter. “Just a freak landing and what looked like a snapped tibia.”
CBS’s Tracy Wolfson reported during halftime that Ware told his teammates at courtside: “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be okay. You guys go win this thing.” Louisville went on to defeat Duke 85-63, advancing the team to the Final Four.
