Fans of the comic strip “Calvin & Hobbes” might find common ground with Donnie Darko enthusiasts in a video parody released by Gritty Reboots on Thursday.

Set in modern times, the trailer for a “modern take” on the duo’s story follows an older Calvin (David Hudson) as he tries to navigate adulthood despite an imagination that’s not just overactive, but dangerous.

Things escalate when his constant companion, Hobbes (played by Steven Hudson, but voiced by Chris Parker) is kidnapped and taken to another dimension inside Calvin’s mind, forcing him and Susie Derkins (Meagan Naser) to come to the rescue.

“It knows I’m growing up,” Calvin tells Susie. “It’s fighting back. Evolving. And I don’t think I can stop it.”

“I’m not sure you want to,” she replies.
