The head of the anti-LGBT rights group Family Research Council (FRC) on Wednesday used a Fox News segment about MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry’s public education promotional advertisement to rail against equal marriage rights.

Over the last week, conservative websites and pundits have attacked Harris-Perry over the notion that the community has a responsibility in caring for children.

“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have, because we’ve always had kind of a private notion of children,” the MSNBC host says in the spot.

During a Wednesday interview with Fox News host Gretchen Carlson, FRC President Tony Perkins called the idea “collectivism: that everyone, but no one is responsible.”

“It’s a nutty notion, but it’s a staple idea of the left,” he explained. “This is the intellectual love child of the Great Society and the sexual revolution, again, where everyone, but no one is responsible. It’s insane, but it’s a reality of the way the left thinks, the way the way they view our children.”

Carlson admitted that she could understand Harris-Perry’s point, that “people in the community do affect the lives of your children.”

“From a Judeo-Christian world view, the scriptures are very clear that we’re to care for and look out for our neighbor,” Perkins agreed. “But parents are responsible. Kids are still born to moms and dads, to women and men. It still takes a man and woman to create a child. You know, children aren’t born to the neighborhood watch, they are born to a man and a woman. There’s a reason for that. God gives them to a man and woman.”

“That’s a great quote,” Carlson observed.

“And the reality is we have decades of social science that children do best with a mom and a dad who love them, who are married and care for them,” Perkins continued. “Moving away from that notion — which the left would love to do — will be devastating society.”

“I think there’s this liberal ideology driving this that children are a product of, ‘Yeah, so they happen right now to come from a man and a woman but they belong to all of us.’”

In a blog post on Tuesday, Harris-Perry assured conservatives that she had “no designs on taking your children. Please keep your kids!”

She added: “One thing is for sure: I have no intention of apologizing for saying that our children, all of our children, are part of more than our households, they are part of our communities and deserve to have the care, attention, resources, respect and opportunities of those communities.”

“And no hateful thing that you say to me or about me will ever change that I want those things for your children.”
