Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) broke the disturbing news of the Boston Marathon bombing to the Senate on Monday afternoon.
“It appears that tragedy has struck the Boston Marathon,” he said on the Senate floor. “Bombs have gone off and there are injuries we know of, causalities the severity of which we do not know. We hope and pray there are no fatalities.”
Toomey offered his “thoughts and prayers” to the victims and their families.
The Republicans senator informed the Senate of the bombing before speaking about his legislation to expand background checks to firearm sales at gun shows and on the Internet.
Two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, wounding at least 50 people and killing two others. Police also found two undetonated explosive devices.
