An orthopedic surgeon who witnessed the Boston Marathon bombing on Monday afternoon described the horrific incident to Al Jazeera English.

“It looked like an [improvised explosive device] from Afghanistan,” he said.

Many victims had legs or feet blown off by the explosions, while others suffered open fractures. The surgeon from Florida said he also saw children who were killed or wounded, including a boy who appeared to be about 3-years-old.

“It is beyond me how people can do that to other people,” he added. “I mean, those people just came out to have a good day, and they were enjoying it and having a good time, and then for that to happen is horrible.”

Two explosive devices detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon around 2:50 p.m., injuring at least 100 people and killing two others. One of those killed was reportedly only 8-years-old.
