Canadian officials on Monday announced that they had arrested two men in connection with an al-Qaeda plot to target a railroad that runs from Toronto to New York City.
A statement from RCMP obtained by CBC said that 30-year-old Chiheb Esseghaier and 35-year-old Raed Jaser had been charged with conspiracy to “murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group.”
Sources told CBC that the men had been under surveillance in Quebec and Ontario for more than a year.
RCMP officials explained at a press conference on Monday that the two men had conspired to carry out an “al-Qaeda-supported attack” against a passenger train. It was not immediately clear if the men intended to place bombs inside of trains or on the train tracks.
Officials said that there was “no imminent threat” to passengers or railway employees.
