Police in Middlefield, Ohio released the findings on Friday of an investigation of the man incited a street shootout with two officers before being shot dead himself.
“He got out of the vehicle, intending to kill my officers,” said police chief Arnold Stanko of 42-year-old James Gilkerson. “We don’t know why he did it.”
According to The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Gilkerson fired on officers Erin Thomas and Brandon Savage after being pulled over on a routine traffic stop on March 10. Footage from the officers’ dashboard camera shows Gilkerson yelling “Kill me, kill me” after being hit, but continuing to fire before being shot and killed.
“He was a scumbag, and a terrorist, and he’s dead,” Stanko said.
Thomas required surgery after being shot in the left hand and left thigh. Savage sustained minor injuries to his left knee.
WKYC-TV reported on Friday that, while investigating Gilkerson’s background, authorities found several other firearms, as well as almost 400 bullets and a collection of knives hidden in his mother’s car. They also found several books at his home related to, among other subjects, procuring new identification, building weapons at home and how to dispose of a dead body.
“When you see what he had, how much ammunition he had, and how he reacted to being pulled over by the police,” said Geauga County prosecutor Jim Flaiz. “Certainly I think you can speculate that these officers might have prevented a tragedy down the road.”
