A California newlywed and four of her friends died after the limousine they were riding to her bridal shower caught fire on the highway Saturday night.

KNTV-TV reported on Sunday that the rear passenger side of the vehicle burst into flames while crossing the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge in northern California. Four other women riding in the limousine were able to escape.

“A lot of them were laying on top of each other,” said San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault. “There was a lady who was in a position that she was trying to get out [through] the passenger window that separates the passenger compartment and the driver.”

One of the victims was identified by a family member as Neriza Fojas, a nurse by trade who had recently gotten married in the U.S. and was planning to hold a separate wedding in the Philippines in June for the benefit of other relatives. The other four women killed have not been identified.

The limo driver, Orville Brown, said one of the passengers alerted him after seeing smoke begin to emanate from the car.

“I saw the smoke, pulled over, by the time I was getting out the car there was a lady coming over the partition,” Brown said.

California Highway Patrol officials said the four surviving passengers were taken to nearby medical facilities after suffering burns and smoke inhalation injuries. Two are in critical condition.
