A 3-year-old boy died in Florida on Tuesday after police said he shot himself to death with his uncle’s gun.

Detectives for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said that 3-year-old Jadarrius Speights had found a 9mm gun in a backpack owned by his 29-year-old uncle, Jeffrey Walker. The two shared a bedroom together and the handgun had apparently been unsecured, according to Bay News 9.

The boy was taken to Florida Hospital just after 7 p.m. and was later pronounced dead.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office charged Walker with culpable negligence for exposing a minor to a firearm. The charge is a third degree felony. He was being held in lieu of a $2,000 bond.

Walker was a concealed carry permit holder and had purchased the weapon from a Tampa Bay area gun shop.

It was not immediately clear if the parents, who were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, knew that Walker had the gun.
