Murray is expected to become CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce following his resignation. The Globe reported that Gov. Duval Patrick’s (D) administration has helped Murray land a job after he leaves office. Murray, a former mayor of Worcester, is expected to make $200,000 a year in his new position.
“It’s going to be a bittersweet day,” a senior administration official said to the newspaper. “People are really happy for him, it’s a good job for him, but it’s going to leave a big hole in the administration.”
“I have never said I am not going to be a candidate for office in the future,” Murray told WBZ at the time. “I will continue to be politically active over the next couple of years.”
Questions have also surrounded Murray’s connection to Michael McLaughlin, who pled guilty that same month to four felony counts of understating his annual salary by about $140,000 while working as the director of the Chelsea Holding Authority.
WBZ-TV reported that state officials determined that McLaughlin and another housing authority official broke campaign finance laws barring public employess from political fundraising activities, raising concerns that Murray had taken donations from McLaughlin.
Murray has also been under scrutiny for a January 2012 auto accident in which his car was going at 108 miles per hour after he fell asleep at the wheel without wearing a seat belt. Murray was not seriously injured in the crash.
