Amid a “Gaywatch” segment on Thursday night, The Daily Show host John Oliver surveyed recent protests in France over the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Upon seeing how many of the protesters were dressed, he observed the anti-gay protesters looked “so much gayer than our pro-gay protests.” One man donned a mask, stripped off his shirt, and interrupted the French Open to protest same-sex marriage.

“Look, I don’t want to be in the position of giving tips to bigoted anti-gay forces, but just in terms of pure message discipline, you might want to go with something that doesn’t scream audition piece for Cirque du Soleil,” Oliver remarked.

But France wasn’t the only country to be home to figures who confusingly mixed of flamboyance with anti-gay politics. Russia has cracked down on LGBT individuals — with the support of the oft-topless President Vladimir Putin.
