A suspected car thief in Houston was in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon after being shot by his alleged victims while trying to escape with a cohort.

KTRK-TV reported that the duo was spotted by breaking into at least one pickup truck early Tuesday morning by residents in a northwest Houston neighborhood, then followed to a nearby gas station, where the shooting took place.

The unidentified suspect was shot while trying to get into a pickup truck driven by the other man, causing him to lose his grip on the vehicle and fall to the ground. The getaway vehicle was later found away from the scene, but the driver remains at large. An unidentified third suspect, a woman, was found at the scene, along with a stolen truck.

“We’re trying to locate the suspect that fled because we need to know who was driving that truck and exactly what happened,” police spokesperson Carlos Cardenas told the station.
