An Iowa City man apparently believes the old anti-communist slogan “better dead than red” applies to cars’ tail lights.

Police officers on Wednesday morning responded to reports of a naked man vandalizing cars.

When they arrived at the scene, they witnessed 42-year-old Sean Christopher Flaherty breaking tail lights with a glass bottle. Flaherty reeked of alcohol and had a blood-alcohol content of .083, according to police.

He told told officers he was smashing the tail lights because “red means danger to the republic.” Flaherty broke the tail lights of three different cars, resulting $600 worth of damage.

Flaherty was charged with criminal mischief and public intoxication.
