On this week’s edition of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” host Bill Maher tore into recent statements by right wing commentators like Bill O’Reilly and politicians like Rep. Steve King (R-IA). Both men saw fit to let fly with a series of startlingly racist racist diatribes against African-Americans and Latinos over the past week.
One guest, former U.S. Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) responded to King’s bizarre statements about Mexican drug mules with “calves the size of cantaloupes” crossing the desert in to the us by saying, “Something’s wrong with Congressman King. He’s way off the reservation.” People like Bill O’Reilly are paid to create controversies, he said, but for a public servant, King’s remark crossed a line.
“We have a right to free speech,” he said, “but let’s do it intelligently.”
“I’ll make a religious statement: Steve King is a racist,” said panelist Rev. Jim Wallis, asserting that people and politicians need to “start talking about this issue in moral terms and not political terms.”
Maher moved the conversation to the “white backlash” to the Trayvon Martin verdict, and Bill O’Reilly’s racist tirades from earlier in the week.
Even when they are saying the exact same things, Maher said, they don’t hear each other, because all Republicans hear when Obama says anything about race is “Kill Whitey!”
“They don’t hear what Obama says, because they know what he’s thinking!” Maher said. “They know he’s thinking ‘Kill Whitey!’”
