Monday night on The Daily Show, host John Oliver proved that Australia’s presidential elections were just as much of a gaffe-filled fun-fest as America’s presidential elections.
Why venture into Australian politics? Oliver hoped the demonstration would make Americans cut down the current election season from four years to one month.
“You name a great campaign moment and Australia will get to it this month,” he said.
Oliver showed that, just like the United States, Australians got to witness “a clumsy online pratfall by a candidate for major office.” Namely, one candidate attempted to kiss a baby, but ended up kissing the baby’s mother instead.
Australians also got to witness their own version of Rick Perry’s infamous senior moment. Another candidate said he had a six point plan to prevent immigrants from using boats to enter Australia. But he couldn’t name any of the six points.
Australians even had their own sexting side-show to watch. A member of parliament was caught sending lewd photographs, including a picture of his penis in a glass of red wine.
“That is disgusting,” Oliver remarked. “You do not pair a penis with red wine.”
Australia had its own Sarah Palin, too. In fact, they had a “turbo Palin.”
