Police in Simi Valley, California shot and killed a 29-year-old man suspected of shooting his own mother dead before shooting randomly in his neighborhood while riding a tractor.
KCBS-TV reported that Ryan Carnan’s brother informed authorities on Saturday that Carnan admitted on the phone to killing their mother, identified by neighbors as Sally Carnan. She is believed to be the woman found inside a home that was set on fire before Ryan Carnan was spotted by residents on a tractor, wielding a handgun.
“Guy come by with a tractor. Got my dog there and he comes by and I said, ‘Are you shooting up there?’” one witness, Norm Trevena, told KCBS. “And then he looks at me with the gun. He has the gun. And I said, ‘Oh, you are shooting up there,’ and he just stared at me.”
The suspect later shot at officers, prompting them to return fire. Authorities later told KCBS that they had responded to three mental health-related calls to Carnan’s home, the most recent one being in July 2008, but that the suspect had no criminal record.
