18-year-old De’Marquise Elkins was found guilty of murder on Friday for killing a 13-month-old boy sitting in his stroller in March 2013, the Associated Press reported.

Elkins was also denied a bond request while his attorney, Jonathan Lockwood, prepares an appeal. He faces a possible sentence of life in prison. His mother, Karimah Elkins, was found guilty of tampering with evidence but acquitted on charges of lying to police.

Prosecutors said Elkins and 15-year-old Dominique Lang accosted Sherry West on March 21 and demanded at gunpoint that she give them her money. West testified that when she told them she had no money with her, Elkins shot her child, 13-month-old Antonio Santiago, in the face. Lang will face a separate murder trial later this year.

According to WSB-TV, Lockwood argued that authorities rushed to judgement against Elkins, and relied on testimoney from witnesses with criminal history and, in some cases, a history of drug use, who would change their story. Lockwood also contended that police never investigated West’s family for possible involvement.

“They finished their case in 25 hours,” Lockwood said in court. “Everything else they did after that they just sugarcoated.”
