In what police are investigating as a hate crime, a gay man was attacked and robbed over the weekend by a group of people outside a well-known gay bar in Cleveland.

Jared Fox told WKYC that about 20 young men surrounded him as he was walking towards Cocktails bar just before midnight on Saturday.

“They said what’s in your pockets and I said, I got no money I’m broke, and they said, ‘oh so you’re one of those broke f*ggot?’ And then they just started swinging,” Fox explained.

The men attacked Fox and knocked him to the ground. He told Fox 6 Cleveland that one of the young men asked him if he wanted to die.

Fox managed to escape from the mob and ran inside the bar, where he called police. Cleveland police received four calls about a group of males disturbing the area that night.

“It wasn’t until I was attacked that someone finally came,” Fox said in a video uploaded to YouTube. “And these police officers came and did they get out of the car? Did they ask to see footage? Nope. Nothing. They did nothing.”

Fox was badly bruised in the attack, and also suffered a black eye, a ruptured right ear drum and some hearing loss. His cell phone was also stolen.

Police are investigating the incident as a robbery and hate crime. The beating was captured by surveillance cameras.
