Michael Varnell, whose family is white, said he found someone had written “KKK” and drawn a swastika overnight Wednesday on the front door of his Rutherford County home
“It makes some visceral hate come out in me, but at the same time I have some sympathy because these people are really ignorant,” Varnell told WTVF-TV.
Varnell said he suspects his family was targeted because his brother-in-law is black and his niece and nephew are biracial, and he also thinks his autistic son may have been targeted by the vandals.
“I was actually thinking that this generation would not have to deal with this kind of thing,” said Varnell’s sister-in-law, Sarah Redden. “We are taught not bring our children up with this type of hate.”
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the incident, and Varnell has put up a sign in his yard to tell the vandals he’s praying for them.
“As mad as I am at you and I’d like to take my own justice, God’s got his own plan for you and vengeance is mine said the Lord,” said Varnell.
