Activists rallied on Wednesday to have a series of highly offensive T-shirts pulled from the lineup of items available at Etsy, the crafts clearinghouse website. According to the RH Reality Check blog, Etsy bowed to user demand that sale of the shirts be stopped. However, there are still other items of questionable appropriateness available from the seller, and anti-rape and sexual assault activists are trying to get the seller banned.
“Autumn is perfect for date rape,” read one shirt. “I’m a sensitive guy, I only rape pregnant women,” said another. Still another shirt said, “Old people are useless. You can’t even rape them.”
The seller, fyourtshirt, had seven shirts that explicitly condoned or encouraged rape. All of them have been blocked from sale as violations of Etsy’s terms and conditions, which prohibit the sale of items “that promote, support or glorify acts of violence or harm towards self or others.”
Katherine Hull, spokesperson for the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) told RH Reality Check that her organization started the petition early Wednesday as soon as they heard of the shirts.
“What we’re really trying to do is striving to change the way Americans think about sexual violence,” Hull said. “We’ve been using social media to encourage our supporters to take a stand against these t-shirts and against sexual violence. This is another example of the fact that we need to show that sexual violence has no place in our society.”
RAINN said that it has not received an official response from Etsy, and that while some of the T-shirts have been taken down, some others remain.
“RAINN has not received a response from Etsy, and while some of the t-shirts in question have been removed there are still several that imply incest and non-consensual sex acts,” the organization said, and urged readers to sign a petition to have Etsy remove the seller altogether.
