During his “New Rules” segment on Friday night’s edition of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” host Bill Maher slammed Republicans for their refusal to raise the U.S. minimum wage, which is currently stuck at $7.25 per hour. The host reminded conservatives that paying your employees is one of those “unfortunate expenses of running a business.”

“New Rule,” said Maher, “Until Ronald McDonald starts paying his employees a living wage, he has to wipe that f*cking smile off his face.”

The people who resist raising the minimum wage in this country, he continued, say that raising the minimum wage would cut into profits.

“Well, yeah,” Maher said, “of course. Paying workers is one of those unfortunate expenses of running a business. You know, like taxes or making a product. If you want to get rich on a tax-free enterprise that sells nothing, start a church.”

Businesses like McDonald’s and Walmart don’t pay their workers enough to live on, so employees must turn to to government for assistance in the form of food stamps, school lunches and other social programs that conservatives hate.

“If we force companies like Walmart and McDonald’s to pay their employees enough to eat,” said Maher, “we the taxpayers wouldn’t have to pick up the slack.”
